The Veneto: Rovigo

Rovigo is a medieval town situated on the edge of a river delta (the Po and the Adige). It’s not a usual tourist destination, but I like it because of that….life goes on in Rovigo. It’s a good sized town and easy to tour. You’ll see Venetian touches and palazzi throughout the town as Rovigo was owned by Venice. Piazza Grande/Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II is the center of town and has two fine palazzi (the Rovigo and the Roncale). The Accademia dei Concordi is a museum with some very fine paintings. The 18th century Rotonda/Madonna del Soccorso has been both a church and a municipal building — pop in for a look at the art and architecture (the Baroque altar too). The Museo dei Grande Fiume (Rivers) is located in a former Olivetan monastery (17th century palazzo). The museum has a virtual reality section which shows the importance of the rivers to the town (the rivers have been re-routed, there are canals, they’ve drained river beds etc.). You might wish to check out the Teatro Sociale while you’re in town. There are many cultural events that take place here.
