Gressoney St. Jean

In the idyllic Lys Valley you’ll find charming Gressoney Saint Jean. It is a good place to ski, hike and tour (Monte Rosa is here). It’s a beautiful 16th century village situated right on a lake. It is often referred to as a Walser village — meaning of Swiss and German origin. Above the town is the unique Castel Savoia/Savoy Castle built for Queen Margherita in 1894. She loved the valley and was quite the mountaineer. The style and décor of this unusual castle/mansion are well worth a visit. The Castello e Museo Archeologico is an interesting museum and the castle is a perfect backdrop for the archaeological finds of the area. The town church has a 13th century crucifix believed to be one of the oldest in the region and it is a lovely building. This is a very nice town — lovely scenery, good shops gorgeous surroundings. When you tire of walking the town, stop in a café for something to drink — mulled wine, hot chocolate, glacier wine, café……..
