IN MEDIEVAL CENTER

HOTEL SAN LUCA — Via Interna delle Mura 21 — Spoleto 06049 — ph: 0743223399 fx: 0743223800 — www.hotelsanluca.com - email: sanluca@hotelsanluca.com

Now this is an interesting and beautiful place….it was originally a tannery (19th century), then abandoned in 1960 and restored in 1995 (earning the hotel 4 stars). The restoration is that of total respect for the original structure — it is truly gorgeous. There are 35 rooms and suites with shower, bath (modern marble tiled bathrooms), TV, phone, minibar, views, safe, air conditioning and hair dryer. There are other touches such as towel warmers, mist-proof mirrors, some of the rooms have a balcony and some rooms have Jacuzzi tubs. The décor is in a word — luxurious. The extra romantic touches like painted ceilings in some rooms, painted furnishings and chandeliers add much to the general feel of the place. There’s a beautiful courtyard with tables and chairs, a manicured lawn with tables and chairs, a lovely sitting room with a fireplace (check out the tureen collection in this room), a lovely dining/breakfast area with hand-painted walls and a bar. The hotel is owned by the Zuccari family. This is an ideal spot in Spoleto. FYI: this hotel has meeting rooms and for large groups dinner can be arranged.

HOTEL GATTAPONE — Via Del Ponte 6 — Spoleto 06049 — ph: 0743223447 fx: 0743223448 — www.gattapone.it - email: info@hotelgattapone.it

This is a 4 star hotel right near Rocca Albornoziana (castle), just a short distance from the city center. From the terrace you look out over the Monteluco hills and valley as well as the wonderful Ponte delle Torri (14th century). It’s a lovely villa. The 16 rooms (6 standard rooms and 2 suites in the main house and 8 junior suites in the addition or annex) are decorated in a modern and elegant fashion. The rooms have shower, bath, TV, phone, minibar, safe, air conditioning and lovely panoramic views. The character of the old house is maintained in the architecture and pure style of the place. This is a family owned hotel (Hanke family) and they are most willing to arrange tours, offer advice — they accommodate their guests in a very warm fashion. Breakfast is the only meal served here — it’s good too. A wonderful spot in Spoleto.

L’HOTEL DEI DUCHI — Viale Giacomo Matteotti 4 — Spoleto 06049 — ph: 074344541 fx: 074344543 — www.hoteldeiduchi.com - email: hotel@hoteldeiduchi.com

There are 49 rooms at this beautiful and centrally located 4 star hotel in Spoleto. The hotel sits within the gardens that once belonged to the Ancajani Park and looks onto the Roman Theatre. The rooms are lovely - classic. Each one has shower/bath, air conditioning, phone, TV, phone and minibar (room service too). The terrace restaurant is a wonderful place to dine — Strengozzi al tartufo, Scottadito di agnello al rosmarino are just two of the specialties. The wine list is good too. There’s a bar at this hotel and the public rooms are comfortable and stylish (there’s a warm fireplace near the bar). There’s also a wonderful garden with tables and awnings. This is another great spot at which to stay. FYI: there are meeting facilities here too.

HOTEL CLITUNNO — Piazza Sordini 6 — Spoleto 06049 — ph: 0743223340 fx: 0743222663 — www.hotelclitunno.com - email: info@hotelclitunno.com

There are 40 rooms at this 3 star hotel in the heart of Spoleto. This is a wonderful hotel in an ancient building. The rooms you are offered are either "old style" or standard — frankly, they’re both great, but if you like the beams, antiques and tiles — go with the old style. I was happy in the standard room. The rooms have shower, bath, TV and phone. Two of the rooms have terraces. The overall feel and décor is antique charm. For 35 years the Tomassoni family have welcomed guests to their hotel and offer fair prices to all who visit Spoleto. There’s a really good restaurant here that serves Umbrian cuisine like antipasto Clitunno (great) and strangozzi al tartufo. There’s also a great buffet breakfast served in the mornings. There’s a bar, laundry service, child care service and touring advice. A terrific spot in Spoleto.

HOTEL CHARLESTON — Piazza Collicola 10 — Spoleto 06049 — ph: 0743220052 or 0743223235 fx: 0743221244 — www.hotelcharleston.it - email: info@hotelcharleston.it

There are 18 rooms at this 3 star hotel located in a 17th century building right in the center of town. There are 21 rooms with shower, bath, TV, phone, minibar, hair dryer and air conditioning. The décor is a mix of antique, traditional and charming — and comfortable. The rooms are decorated with original works of art as well as beamed ceilings and parquet floors. In the winter, you are greeted with a fire in the fireplace of the sitting room and in the spring and summer you can have breakfast in the garden. There’s a garage, a TV room, a reading room, a sauna, a wine bar, a regular bar and a fine breakfast buffet.

HOTEL CLARICI — Piazza Della Vittoria 32 — Spoleto 06049 — ph: 0743223311 fx: 0743222010 — www.hotelclarici.com - email: clarici@tiscalinet.it

There are 24 rooms at this quaint little 3 star charmer just away from the city center (short walk). The rooms are cheery and nicely done (mine had a bright plaid bedspread and modern art). Each room has shower, TV, phone, minibar and air conditioning. My favorite place in the hotel is the rooftop bar and terrace — the views of Spoleto are wonderful. A good breakfast is served here. The Clarici family will offer advice on touring and dining — they are very friendly. Enjoy!

HOTEL RISTORANTE ARCA — S.S.Flaminia km 127 — Spoleto 06049 — ph: 074349368 or 074349340 fx: 074349293 — www.hotelarca.com - email: hotelarca@hotelarca.com

At the entrance to town is the modern style 3 star Hotel Arca. There are 57 rooms with shower, bath, TV and phone. The décor is simple and comfortable with a mix of modern in the rooms. The restaurant serves typical cuisine of the region as well as national favorites (all good). Some of the specialties are spaghetti alla carbonara, penne alla norcia (my favorite) and other great food (and good wines too). There’s a bar, room service, a nice staff and a general good feeling here. This is a great spot at a great price with ample parking and ease of touring the area. The Contenti family run a good operation.

OUTSIDE CITY — VILLAS/FARMS

CASA MATILDA — Torregrosso 19 — Castel Ritaldi 06044 — ph: 074351312 fx: 074351224 — email: casamailde@libero.it

There are 4 mini -apartments (16 beds) at this country house surrounded by olive groves and vineyards in the Umbrian hills. It’s a wonderful spot! Each of the apartments has kitchen, bath and is designed for 2 to 5 adults. The décor is country-rustic with lots of charm. There are terraces, a garden, a veranda for BBQ-ing and a bar/shop that stays open late (and fun times can be had here!). Your host is Antonio Cordella and he is most accommodating. There’s so much to see and do in Umbria and Antonio is glad to offer tips, advice and general directions. It’s a lovely country house with a nice home-style feel. Totally relaxed atmosphere.

AZIENDA AGRITURISTICA "L’ULIVO" — Localita Bazzano di Sotto - Via Bazzanese 62 — Spoleto 06049 — ph/fx: 074349031 - www.agrulivo.com - email: agrulivo@tin.it

Just 5 km from Spoleto this farm (surrounded by olive groves and on the edge of the ancient village of Bazzano di Sotto) offers 5 apartments with shower, bath, TV, kitchen, terrace or garden and views. It’s a quiet and well located retreat. The décor is country rustic — comfortable. The farm’s main activity is olive growing and you’ll enjoy the harvest, olive pressing and tour if you’re there at that time (November and December). Otherwise, purchase the tasty stuff! There are many trails for hiking and there’s a pool in the middle of the olive groves! There are many types of bikes and on request you can get tours of the area set up (with support vehicles — depending on the duration of the trip you require). Lessons for varied interests can also be arranged from ceramics and flower arranging to painting. An enjoyable spot.

AGRITURISMO "RIVOLI" — Localita Uncinano 18 — Spoleto 06049 — ph/fx: 0743268106 — http://rivoli1.supereva.it - email: agririvoli@edisons.it

There are 15 rooms at this farm located just 6 km from Spoleto on the top of a hill. All of the food served here is grown or made on the farm. The farm grows grains and raises animals (pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, pigeons), they make their own wine and produce their own olive oil. They sell this produce to their guests! Do buy! The beauty of this is that you’ll know how it tastes because this is what you’re served here. You cannot go wrong. The farmhouse is very old and is surrounded by a garden, patios, a pool and olive groves. The rooms are decorated in rustic style and have bath and shower, some have a TV and some have balconies. The pool and gardens are great for relaxing and the patios make a great spot to watch the sun set or to take your drink at the end of your meal. The restaurant here is very good and as mentioned before — everything is grown right here on the farm. The food is fresh and delicious. Do try the la crescionda (a great dessert), the stringozzi (with the special sauce of the farm) and other fine dishes of the area. You can take your breakfast in the garden — it’s very good. There are many activities to participate in like rafting, hiking, horseback riding, tennis, biking and touring. Your hosts (the Rivoli family) will arrange it all and will also offer suggestions. A good spot in the country.

FRANTOIO MARFUGA — Localita Fonti del Clitunno 6 — Campello sul Clitunno 06042 — ph: 0743275989 fx: 0743521338 — www.marfuga.com - email: marfuga@marfuga.it

There are 5 apartments at this Umbrian homestead on a hill with tall cypresses lining the hillside (picture perfect). From here you get wonderful views of the Fonti del Clitunno. The five apartments are perfect for either 2 or 4 people and are decorated with antiques and country furnishings. There are iron beds, chandeliers, farm tables, well equipped kitchens or kitchen corners, baths and showers, brick floors, terraces — some have fireplaces. The décor is very nice — not spartan — comfortable. For many generations the Gradassi family (a family of ancient agricultural origin) has produced olive oil. As a matter of fact, the family has found documents, measurements and other records that show that they have provided olive oil for customers for 100s of years — not just olive oil — some of the best olive oil in Italy. They still do. Marfuga hill is where the farm is located, thus the name of the oil. You can buy their olive oil, olive spread/paste and honey when you stay here. If you’re here in November and December (during the harvest) you can see exactly how they make their olive oil (they press the olives within 24 to 36 hours after they are picked) and they deliver their oil at it’s freshest to consumers. Do make sure you take a tour no matter what time of year you are there. There’s much to see and do in the area and some of the small villages surrounding Marfuga are treats you’ll not see on most trips — explore! There are restaurants nearby in the village, there’s tennis nearby, a pool, sport fishing, hikes — just ask Francesco or Federica, they’re happy to aid you. A very cool place.

ABBAZIA SAN PIETRO IN VALLE — Localita Ferentillo - Via Case Sparse di Macenano — Ferentillo 05034 — ph: 0744780129 fx: 0744435522 or 0744380121 — www.sanpietroinvalle.com - email: abbazia@sanpietroinvalle.com

This ancient abbey is just 15 km from Spoleto and is a wonderful wonderful place to stay! The legend goes like this: There were 2 hermits named Giovanni and Lazzaro who spent their days searching for mystical places. When Giovanni died, Lazzaro prayed for consolation and he sent a dream to Faroaldo II (the Duke of Spoleto and owner of the land where the hermits lived) where St. Peter came to him and asked the Duke to build a church and monastery in his honor — so, the Duke built the monastery/abbey from the dream (in the 8th century). It was enlarged in the 11th and 12th centuries. Inside the church there are sculptures and fragments from the Roman era and a valuable sarcophagus. The frescoes throughout are amazing (and depict scenes from the old and new testaments). The Abbey is set on a plateau in the hills of Monte Solenne and is surrounded by hills, greenery and ancient beauty. The entire place has been preserved beautifully and the décor is in keeping with this ancient building — you’ll love it! All of the rooms have private bath, phone, TV and minibar. Again, the décor is lovely, comfortable — beams, arches, arched stone ceilings, cloisters, frescoes — total beauty. There’s also a restaurant, a reading room, a panoramic garden, parking, paths for trekking, biking and nearby there are pools and tennis as well as horses and kayaking. Totally breathtaking.

AZIENDA AGRITURISTICA COLLELIGNANI — Via dei Pini 21 — Localita Eggi — Spoleto 06049 — ph: 074349676 fx: 0743339361 — www.collelignani.com - email: collelignani@edisons.it

There are 7 apartments at the "red farmhouse" located just 4 km from Spoleto. The farm grows barley, wheat, corn and olives on over 50 hectares of land. The apartments have bathroom, living room with kitchen corner, TV, terrace or patio, independent entrances and panoramic views. The décor is rustic, country and antique — a pleasant mix. Tommaso Mastrolia Zizzari is the owner of the farm and you’re offered a comfortable stay in a familial atmosphere with total respect for your privacy. It’s an enjoyable stay in pleasant surroundings. There’s also a garden and a pool here.

LE CASALINE — Localita Casaline — Poreta di Spoleto — Spoleto 06049 — ph: 0743521113 fx: 0743275099 — www.lecasaline.it — email: informazioni@lecasaline.it

There are 7 rooms at this 3 star hotel with a wonderful restaurant. The building dates back to 1700 and was built for Pope Leo XVII as a mill to grind his olives. The hotel and restaurant sit on a high plain, surrounded by olive groves, pine and oak trees — views look out on the River Clitunno. Le Casaline remained a mill until the middle of the 1800s when it was converted to a barn to rear dairy cattle. It remained a barn for cattle until 1960. In 1970 the Marquis Pucci of Genga decided to create a restaurant and small hotel. He took the buildings and restored them and opened the restaurant and hotel in 1972. Benedetto and Patrizia Zeppadoro were asked to manage the complex and have been doing so with their growing family since that time (they are wonderful folks). This is a wonderful little place with the emphasis on great cuisine — fresh and fabulous! These folks are passionate about the food they cook and serve and it shows. The rooms have shower, bath, TV, phone and views. The décor is a mix of rustic, antique, country and charming….you’ll like it here. You’ll love the food and the Zeppodoro family.

LA PORTA DEL TEMPO - Via Del Sacramento 2 - Stroncone 05039 - ph: 0744608190 fx: 0744609034 - www.portadeltempo.com - email: info@portadeltempo.com

There are 8 rooms at this lovely 15th century country house/palazzo. It means "The Ancient Door". The house is in a charming medieval village (at the top of a cobblestone street) with much to offer a traveler to this area - you're close to Umbria yet in northeastern Lazio (a good location to be sure). Every comfort has been taken into consideration here - the restoration, the furnishings, the finishing touches - great care was taken with this restoration - the result is an extraordinarily cool country hotel. The rooms are decorated in a charming and sophisticated fashion and each room has bath, shower, TV and phone (gorgeous). The furniture and fabrics just fit the atmosphere - actually they enhance it (if that's possible!). This truly is a lovely lovely place to stay. There is a restaurant that is owned by the hotel owners and located just 300 meters from the hotel in the town ofnStroncone named Osteria La Porta Del Tempo (Via del Macello 6/8). Arrangements can be made at the hotel to dine there. It's a fun place with live music on some nights - a town gathering place! What fun! I like this country house and restaurant (a lot)!
