HOTEL BRUFANI PALACE — Piazza Italia 12 — Perugia 06121 — ph: 0755732541 fx: 0755720210 — www.brufanipalace.com - email:  reservationsbru@sinahotels.it

This is a splendid-fabulous 5 star hotel. The building dates back to the 19th century and is situated on Colle Landone, one of the most majestic sites in town (at the top of the hill in the center of town). There are 92 spacious rooms and suites and the décor is befitting of a palace (and a 5 star hotel) — luxury….The rooms have bath, TV, phone, minibar, safe and modem connection — everything and more….The décor is elegant — think palatial, warm, rich, inviting, antique….think paintings, frescoes, fireplaces….luxurious and just transporting - memorable. The hotel also has great dining at The Collins Restaurant with its open terrace and serves Umbrian cuisine (the wine cellar is good too). The hotel also has a garage and an American bar. This is one of the most elegant hotels in town……beyond wonderful……

LA ROSETTA — Piazza Italia 19 — Perugia 06121 — ph/fx: 0755720841 — www.perugiaonline.com/larosetta - email: larosetta@perugiaonline.com

This hotel is in a great location. It’s at the top of the hill (just down from Brufani and Bella Vista). The restaurant here is a favorite of mine….I spent a nice New Year’s Eve dining with friends here….and, on another occasion (the next year to be exact), I treated my parents to a fabulous and memorable dinner here. Yes, I do like this place….There are 85 rooms at this 4 star hotel that has been family owned and run since 1922. Each of the rooms has shower, bath, TV, phone, minibar, hair dryer and some rooms have balconies and views. The décor is charming and comfortable. Some of the rooms are amazingly ornate with frescoes, chandeliers and other fancy touches, others are less formal — all are pretty, all are unique. I mentioned the restaurant earlier, but the Umbrian cuisine served here is exceptional. The ravioli in walnut sauce, the veal "la rosetta", the truffle lasagna, the tagliatelle in zucchini and saffron sauce — all just wonderful! The Paradisi Toscani family do know how to run a hotel. You’ll enjoy a drink at the bar here (very clubby/leather/warm) and there are meeting rooms as well.

The hotel has a small garden, a pool, a lovely terrace with great views and a fitness facility. There is also a very good restaurant serving traditional Umbrian cuisine including tagliolini with porcini mushrooms, risotto with seasonal vegetables, veal filet with lemon cream sauce and ice cream with chocolate sauce (perugina chocolate sauce!).

This hotel is in the center of the lower town (not up in the historic section), but it is quite a hotel. It’s a 4 star property with 130 rooms. The décor is rustic, antique and very pretty. Each room is named after an artist or wine producer and the rooms are decorated with art by the artist (how cool is that?). The rooms have shower, bath, TV, phone, minibar, hair dryer, air conditioning and views (over the green countryside). The food at this hotel is exceptional. The wines offered are incredible (the list is one of the best ever). Some of the specialties served here are umbricelli con rancetto, stragozzi with lamb sauce and wild boar with spelt polenta (try the varieties of olive oil and vinegar — who knew there were so many?). The hotel has another fabulous property attached to it — the Gio Wine and Deli….4000 square meters of food, wine and crafts (a must see for any traveler) — think of the gifts, picnics and pure enjoyment of looking around this place. The hotel has recently taken over a nearby noble property (16th century) and will have 3 wonderful suites in the near future (restoration is in progress right now). The hotel has a lovely terrace that looks over the rooftops of Perugia (such a great view) - breakfast is served here daily (when it rains there is a covered dining room). There are 94 rooms at this 3 star hotel in Perugia…..the word is chocolate here…..before I start the hotel description, I have to tell you that there is an entire meal — based on cocoa — that can be ordered at the restaurant here! Have I tried it, NO, but that should not stop you (I’m a pasta girl — chocolate is for dessert and snacks). Maybe next time I’ll order the meal…..As mentioned, the hotel has 94 well appointed rooms. Each room has bath, shower, phone, TV, minibar and air conditioning. The décor in the rooms is classic with sweet touches (some of the rooms have painting on the walls — vines, trees, bowers). The public rooms are sleek and comfortable. The restaurant serves Umbrian fare as well as that chocolate meal and the dishes here are very good. There’s a pool, a terrace and a garden. CASTELLO DELL’OSCANO
— Localita Cenerente 06134 — Strada Forcella 37 — ph: 075690125 fx: 075690666 —
www.oscano.it and http://oscano.com and www.oscano-castle.com - email: info@oscano.com or reservation@oscano.com

Set in the middle of the forest, just outside Perugia is this beautiful Neo-Gothic castle (a real castle). There are actually 3 residences on the property and you can stay at any one of them (this is a large property). The Castello has 11 wonderful suites and junior suites decorated in 17th and 18th century style. The Villa Ada is a 19th century house that has 21 elegant rooms (comparable to a 4 star property). La Macina has 13 apartments which are simple but provide all the comfort you would need. Each apartment can accommodate 7 to 8 persons. The restaurant is for residents only and is served in the tradition and spirit of the castle and the original Kings and Counts who stayed here many years ago. The menu is selected daily by the chef based on the freshest ingredients in season (and local). You order the table d’hote (2 starters, 2 pastas, one main course, 2 side dishes, water and dessert — all for about $30 per person). Dinner is served at 8:30pm each evening. The hotel offers many diversions including horseback riding, olive oil tasting (there are 5000 olive trees on the property) — in October and November you can even help pick olives, go to the mill and see how olive oil is made — the best part is when they bring out the fresh bread or bruschetta and you have your first taste of the oil on the bread. The wine shop will organize wine-tastings, the chef will conduct cooking lessons (with a member of the Cordon Bleu cooking circuit) — they are well priced and depend on how many people participate (about $15 for the wine tasting and about $35 for the cooking lesson) and the hotel will help with rental cars, mini-buses and will organize tours (they’ll take you to the Baci Perugina chocolate factory, to Deruta for pottery and you can even go truffle hunting). Who would not want to stay here????? A castle……a dream……

LE TRE VASELLE —Localita Torgiano 06089 — Via G. Garibaldi 48 — ph: 0759880447 fx: 0759880214

This hotel is set in Torgiano, a town known for Lungarotti wines — Dr. Lungarotti owns this hotel. Torgiano is a fortified village with a good wine museum. You can even arrange to see the wine production on the estate if you wish. The hotel has a stone façade and you stay in the main building or one of two annexes (all great). This hotel has a Buon Ricordo restaurant. The special meal is millefoglie di vitello al rubesco e anelli di tartufo nero/veal, red wine and black truffles — yum!) If you eat the special meal you’ll receive a porcelain plate that shows the meal, the town and the restaurant. These are great souvenirs and collectors items. These restaurants are known throughout Italy as having the best food, wine and ambiance. There is a great terrace where you can take your meals in good weather or enjoy them in the dining rooms (equipped with fireplaces in winter). This is a great spot to stay.
