Gubbio
is a charming town (very beautiful) with a great history. It sits
just below Monte Ingino and looks out over the valley below. The
medieval center is all stone (ochre in color), steps, alleys, palazzi
and arches. The place to start your tour is at Piazza Grande
(the main square) with the Palazzo dei Consoli and Museo
Civico (the bronze Eugubian Tablets are here, they were found
in the 15th century and date back to 300 to 100BC). The
Palazzo dei Consoli is a Gothic building that looks out over the
Piazza Grande. Just off the piazza and up the Via Ducale are the
Palazzo Ducale and the Duomo (13th century).
Inside the duomo be sure to check out the Bishops chapel -
very ornate and lovely. The imposing Palazzo Ducale/Ducal Palace
was built in the 15th century. Inside there are frescoes
and lovely rooms (a garden too). If you feel like going crazy or
tempting fate
.walk 3 times around the Fontana dei Pazzi
.if
you do this youll go mad or so the story goes
.Im
not in to tempting fate so have never done this
..The Teatro
Romano is just outside the city and you can walk among the ruins
here (either go by car or take the funivia or cable car). Market
day in Gubbio is Tuesday.
