IN MEDIEVAL CENTER

RELAIS DUCALE - Via Galeotti 19 - Gubbio 06024 - ph: 0759220157 fx: 0759220159 - www.mencarelligroup.com - email: relaisducale@mencarelligroup.com

A very nice hotel located between The Palazzo dei Consoli and The Montefeltro Palace (right in the heart of the medieval center). The Relais Ducale was once the guest quarters of the Montefeltro Palace. In 1997 the building was restored and became a hotel. You can well imagine the massive stone walls, high vaulted ceilings and stone archways and ceilings here….this hotel is wonderfully gorgeous. This is a 4 star property. The 30 rooms are sumptuously furnished with antiques, lush fabrics, fine art and they have bath, satellite TV, phone, mini-bar, air conditioning, Jacuzzi tubs and great views. There are 3 suites (one has a balcony that overlooks the town). There’s a terrace, a bar, a pool, a garden on the third level with wonderful views over the rooftops and countryside and a park. There’s valet parking and a garage shuttle too. The hotel offers cooking classes and truffle hunting excursions. It’s a great spot in a great location. The Mencarelli family have some wonderful properties in the area….they run fine hotels (and restaurants).

BOSONE PALACE - Via XX Settembre 22 - Gubbio 06024 - ph: 0759220688 fx: 0759220552 - www.mencarelligroup.com - email: bosone@mencarelligroup.com

This is a great 3 star hotel located in the heart of the medieval center. It’s actually part of the old Palazzo Raffaelli. The main rooms are grand and decorated with frescoes and gilt. The 30 rooms are decorated nicely and offer shower, bath, minibar, TV and phone — some have great views. The décor is different in each room — all pretty — some really decorative (as in try to get a suite). The breakfast room is very lovely — ornate — very pretty. The staff is particularly helpful and made some great dining recommendations on my last visit. I really like this hotel.

HOTEL GATTAPONE - Via Ansedei 6 - Gubbio 06024 - ph: 0759272489 fx: 0759271269 - www.mencarelligroup.com - email: gattapone@mencarelligroup.com

This 3 star hotel is right in the center of everything…everything old and interesting (as in great location). It’s a casual hotel (a former palazzo)with timbered ceilings and old touches — a nice place to stay. There are 18 rooms with bath, phone, TV, hair dryer and minibar (some rooms offer great views). The décor is nice — totally comfortable (a mix of modern and traditional). The bedrooms and main rooms are comfortable too.

HOTEL SAN MARCO — Via Perugina 5 — Gubbio 06024 — ph: 0759220234 fx: 0759273716 — www.hotelsanmarcogubbio.com - email: info@hotelsanmarcogubbio.com

Almost like staying in someone’s ancient house (built over 700 years ago), but you’re given privacy and modern amenities. This is a 3 star hotel right in the center of town (very busy area). There are 63 rooms with bath/shower, TV, phone and air conditioning. The décor is antique and traditional…..nice Italian style. The hotel is in a central location — there’s a garden, nice public rooms, terraces, views and a good restaurant.

HOTEL ODERISI BALESTRIERI — Via Mazzatinti 2 — Gubbio 06024 — ph: 0759220662 fx: 0759220663

Located within the walls of medieval Gubbio — in the center of town, this is a 2 star hotel. There are 21 rooms with shower, bath, TV, phone, safe, hair dryer and a good buffet breakfast. This is a very comfortable hotel. There are good views and terraces to enjoy them on. A good spot to hang your hat.

PALAZZO BALDUCCI — Via Reposati 8 — Gubbio 06024 — ph: 0759220968 fx: 0759223021 — www.palazetto.com/balducci.htm - email: alfredo.brofferio@infoservice.it

A 17th century building (historical significance) in the historic center that rents flats by the week at very good prices. One flat has dining room, living room with fireplace, kitchen and bedroom (services of course). The larger sized flat has all of that, plus 2 sleep sofas in the living room. Basically you’re living in an historical apartment in the center of town with a garden and ambiance….the rooms are rustic and comfortable. An interesting alternative to a hotel.

ALBERGO LA LOCANDA DEL DUCA — Via Piccardi 1 — Gubbio 06024 — ph: 0759277753 www.GUBBIO.com/LACANTINA - email: lacantina@gubbio.com

Located in the medieval center, this hotel occupies 16th century buildings. The hotel is a very good 1 star property with 7 nice rooms (rustic in décor). The rooms have bath, TV and views. The buildings look out over the alleyways of Gubbio. The rooms are comfortable, reasonably priced and there’s a good ristorante associated with the hotel called La Cantina (Via Piccotti 3) serving Umbrian specialties including pasta with funghi porcini and pasta with tartufo — the pizza is good here too!

OUTSIDE CITY — VILLAS/FARMS

VILLA MONTEGRANELLI — Localita Monteluiano 06024 — Via Benamati 8 — ph: 0759220185 fx: 0759273372 — www.villamontegranellihotel.it - email: villamontegranelli@paginesi.it

This villa outside of Gubbio (about 2 miles) was built in the 18th century. It carries the name of the original owners: Counts Guidi di Romena and Montegranelli. During the 13th and 14th century it was probably a fortified palace and in the 18th century it was updated to meet the style standards of the time (note the frescoes and inner rooms). It’s stone façade, lovely landscaped lawn (great views of the city and mountains) and country style rooms make you feel as if you’ve landed among the rich and famous of long ago! I think it’s a neat place to stay if you prefer to be outside the city. It is a 3 star establishment and the 20 rooms have bath, TV, phone, mini-bar and panoramic views. There are 3 junior suites with frescoes too. The reception and public rooms are lovely here. The restaurant is well known, well liked and serves local specialties including black truffle pasta. .

CASTELLO DI PETROIA — Localita Petroia/Scritto di Gubbio 06020 — ph: 075920287 fx: 075920108 — www.petroia.it - email: info@petroia.it

This is actually a group of medieval buildings surrounded by castle walls (dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries). In 1422, Federico da Montefeltro (the Duke of Urbino) was born here. There’s an entirely historical feeling that you get while staying here. First, the setting is gorgeous - you’re at the foot of the Appenines and you look out over the Chiascio River Valley. Second, the rooms (all 6 with bath, TV, phone, minibar and views -all gorgeous). The décor is antique, refined, elegant — transporting. Third, you get peace and quiet in a lovely setting. There is a restaurant here and the cuisine is typical of the area — all good too! The owners raise pure-bred Chianina cattle. I’d say it’s well worth it to stay here. It’s a dream come true.

ABBAZIA DI VALLINGEGNO — Localita Vallingegno 06020 — ph: 075920158 fx: 0759227007 — www.abbaziadivallingegno.it - email: vagaste@iol.it

This was a Benedictine monastery dating back to 1100….it was often visited by St. Francis and St. Ubaldo (Gubbio’s patron saint). The abbazia is about 12 Km from Gubbio and a wonderful place to stay. It is owned by Ornella Mulazzani and Stefano Vagaggini. There are 6 apartments with bath, TV, terrace or balcony and wonderful views. The décor is rustic and charming (attention has been paid to the décor to keep it consistent with the location and the style of the abbazia). This monastery offers horseback riding lessons, language lessons and can arrange for anything you want to learn (pottery, cooking etc.). The restaurant serves Umbrian and Tuscan cuisines for the guests. Some of the specialties are lasagne al tartufo, carne alla brace, tartine e salumi umbri and cacciagione. There’s a pool with a panoramic view, mountain bikes and ping pong too. The entire feeling is one of relaxation……a great place to stay.

OASI VERDE MENGARA — Localita Mengara 06024 — ph: 0759227004 fx: 075920049 — email: oasiverd@tin.it

This is a 200 year old farmhouse. It’s simple, comfortable, lovely….and set in an oasi verde (green oasis). The atmosphere is casual and homey — beams, stucco, tiles, wood — the rooms (of which there are 17) are furnished very nicely — they’re pretty and totally comfy. It’s an enjoyable place — evocative and memorable. There’s a good restaurant, a pool with views of the countryside, bikes — peace and quiet. A neat place.

HOTEL TORRE DEI CALZOLARI PALACE — Localita Torre dei Calzolari 06020 — ph: 0759256327 fx: 0759256320 — www.GUBBIO.IT - email: HOTEL@TORRECALZOLARI.COM

This is a 12th century palace/noble residence in the countryside. It’s gorgeous, luxurious and reasonably priced. The public rooms are in the palace (it’s got a crenellated roof too) and the 25 guest rooms are in an adjacent villa. Each has a bath, TV, phone, mini-bar and air conditioning. There’s also an ancient chapel (think vows — new ones or renewals), gardens and a pool — among other activities. The restaurant (Ristorante IlCastello) serves local and international cuisine…..all delicious. A charming spot!

LOCANDA DEL GALLO — Localita S. Cristina 06020 — ph/fx: 0759229912 — www.locandadelgallo.it/ - email: locanda.del.gallo@infoservice.it

There’s a lot of history at this 12th century home owned by the Marchesi Capranica del Grillo. It dominates a hill and overlooks the Umbrian countryside. The plot of land that houses "La Locanda" was originally occupied by the castle of S. Cristina (built at the beginning of the 12th century). S. Cristina sat on the border of 2 important cities: Gubbio and Perugia. Under orders from the reigning city (Perugia) the castle was destroyed (1397). It wasn’t until the 17th century that S. Cristina was won back by Gubbio, despite the fact that the landowners of the time were all from Perugia (the Earls Della Penna). In 1650, the fate of La Locanda was sealed when Cosimo del Grillo (a nobel Florentine) was offered Francesca della Penna’s hand in marriage. Francesca’s dowry was S. Cristina. In 1672, Cosimo got permission from the Pope to make S. Cristina a "marquisate". In 1823, a church and vestry were added. In 1831 the very last descendent of the Del Grillo family (Virginia) left her inheritance to her cousin, the Marquise Giuliano Capranica when they married. The Locanda is a lovely place to stay. There are 10 rooms with bath that are decorated in an oriental/Indonesian style — wonderfully grand and interesting when placed against the ancient architecture of the locanda — very lovely. There’s cooking here by a great chef who cooks only for the guests. You can choose to dine in or not. There’s much to see in the area and there’s also a nice pool to relax in. A memorable place. FYI: there are even meeting room facilities.
