Trento/Trent
is a beautiful town to visit in this region of the same name.
It is, in fact a good sized city with wonderful Renaissance
buildings and a medieval center (much of it pedestrian - traffic
free). Piazza del Duomo is the cobbled center of town.
On the middle of the square is the beautiful Neptunes
Fountain/Fontana del Nettuno (18th century).
The duomo/cathedral is a 12th century Gothic-Romanesque
structure with a 16th century campanile/bell tower.
Inside the duomo there are frescoes and underneath there are
remains of a 5th century basilica note
the mosaic floors and walls here (these were found in 1970).
On the other side of the square is the Palazzo Pretorio,
a 13th century building which now houses the Museo
Diocesano. There are Flemish tapestries, religious treasures
and paintings inside. Also on the square are two palazzi called
the Case Rella which are decorated with frescoes on the
exterior. The Castello del Buonconsiglio (13th
century) was once the home of prince-bishops (rulers of Trento).
The castello is actually several castles (Castelvecchio, Palazzo
Magno and the Torre dellAquila). These lovely palazzi
are fresco filled and gorgeous. Today the Castello is the Museo
Provinciale dArte di Trento and the Museo del Risorgimento
(World War finds and memorabilia). In the Museo Provinciale
there are paintings, sculptures, furnishings, ceramics and archaeological
treasures. Stroll around town and check out the following lovely
piazzas: Piazza Raffaello Sanzio, Piazza della Fiera
and Piazza Dante. Via Belanzani has some fine
palazzi with frescoed facades its a great street
to walk. Via Manci is another beautiful street with interesting
houses/palazzi. Santa Maria Maggiore (16th
century) is a Renaissance church which at one time hosted meetings
of the Council of Trent. Of note here are the likenesses of
the members of the council, the campanile and the marble choir
stalls. Market day is Thursday in Trento.
