Schenna

Schenna overlooks Merano as it sits in the hills…..it’s close to Merano, but is a different place altogether. It’s a sunny resort town with vineyards, orchards, trees, forests — all in the hills — all very beautiful. Castle Schenna was built in the 14th century by Petermann of Schenna. It was changed through the years, owned by various noble families and finally came to Archduke Johann (Austria) in the 19th century. He left it to the current owner the Count of Merano. You can tour the castle and see (and admire) the architecture, the changes through the years, the décor, the rooms, the collections - and you should. The Count’s family still resides here and their living quarters/area are off limits (of course). The Archduke built himself (and his wife, Anna) a mausoleum in the late 19th century and it is gorgeous (neo-Gothic in style). Do stop in — the chapel houses the marble sarcophagus of Johann and Anna. The parish church (a 16th century "redo") has some fine frescoes from the 15th century (only discovered in the late 1970s and 80s). The Chiesa di San Giorgio (12th century) is Romanesque, but has some fine frescoces and a 16th century altarpiece.
