Bressanone

Bressanone (Brixen in German) is a wonderful little town with a "border" history — think Tyrol. The streets and alleys are fun to wander — I always find something new and beautiful here. The old town is pleasant and centers around the Piazza del Duomo. In the piazza you will find the 10th century church/duomo with both Romanesque and Baroque features dominating the square. The church has two campaniles/bell towers. Inside you will find a ceiling fresco by Troger. The cloister (12th century) is a must see — the frescoes here on the vaulted ceiling are amazing (depicting scenes from the Bible). The baptistery has frescoes too. And if that many frescoes weren’t enough, there are more in the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista (11th century) — to get here you go through the cloisters of the duomo. The Palazzo dei Principi Vescovi/Palazzo Vescovile/Court Palace was built in the 14th century for the bishop-princes (a residence) — a beautiful building. Today it houses the Museo Diocesano and the Museo dei Presepi. This is a fine museum with a variety of important pieces. Market day is Monday in Bressanone.
