Avigliana is situated on a hill (in the mountains) right next to two lakes: Lago Grande and Lago Piccolo. At the top of the hill is a dominating 10^th century castle (in ruins). You’ll like the views from up here.
The main squares are the Piazza Santa Maria and the Piazza Conte Rosso (the castle is here). The Gothic/Romanesque Chiesa di San Pietro (10^th century) has some fine frescoes. The Torre dell’Orologio is a 13^th century clock tower. The Chiesa di San Giovanni (13^th century) has some beautiful paintings. The Sacra di San Michele (an abbey) is unbelievably beautiful – it’s a must see. Make sure you see the Porta della Zodaico by Niccolo.
