Duino Aurisina

Duino is a fishing village overlooking the Sistiana Bay — breathtaking….There are two castles on the cliffs, one which is in ruins and built in the 11th century and one that was built in the 16th century. The Castello/Rocca, its tower and arches are the only remains of the wonderful fortress. The newer castle (16th century) is now the home of a prince (it is a castle — what’s a castle without a prince?). Hiking is popular and those interested in this pursuit can locate the Sentiero Rilke (path) which takes a grand tour/trek along cliffs (through forests and over the bay — from Duino to Sistiana). The path is named after the German poet (Rilke) who loved this area and town and was inspired to write because of the beauty found here.
