Calabria: Stilo

Stilo….half the fun is getting there! This "hill town" clings to the side of Mount Consolino. It’s desolate, intriguing, beautiful and Greek. The main draw here (after the drive up) is La Cattolica, a small Byzantine church — in perfect proportion and in brick. This church dates back to the 7th century. There are 5 domes/cupolas and a pretty interior with frescoes. Stroll the town — there’s much to see as the village is so very old. Some of the churches to pop in are: the Cattedrale, Chiesa di San Francesco, Chiesa di San Giovanni and Chiesa di San Domenico. There’s a lovely fountain/Dei Delfini in town too. Check out the ruins of the castle, several churches (St. Giovanni Vecchio and St. Nicola) and the caves of the Basilian monks. Tuesday is market day in Stilo.
