A great Norman castle sits at the top of medieval Melfi and the town spills out down below. This is a walled city. The town was a favorite of Frederick II. The castle now contains the Museo Nazionale del Melfese where there are great archaeological treasures and the tablets with the codes of law (according to Frederick II) called the Constitutiones of Augustales. Do check out the Byzantine jewels there too. The 12th century duomo and bell tower/campanile are worth a look. Since you’re close to Rionero in Vulture, stop in at the D’Angelo Fratelli Winery on Via Provinciale del Vulture 8/ph: 0972721517 — it’s a lovely place and produces some fine wines (Aglianico del Vulture). Market day in Melfi is Wednesday and Saturday.
