Basilicata: Maratea
As beautiful
as the Amalfi Coast (north by about 115 miles), Maratea is
a seaside haven
..a beautifully situated and panoramic resort
on the Gulf of Policastro and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Maratea,
and this area are less touristy/less visited than the Amalfi Coast
(but are worth a visit and make a perfect stop when traveling down
the coast to Calabria and Sicily). The town rests on the hills of
Mount San Biagio the views and the setting are unbelievably
gorgeous well preserved a blending of the chic and
the rustic. The old town is above the port and is a medieval
treasure with alleys, palazzi, ancient buildings and churches covering
the lush hillsides (do see the Chiesa di San Vito/11th
century). Above the old town at the summit of Mount San Biagio (high
on the top of the hill) is the Basilica di San Biagio and
the grand and gleaming, white Carrara marble statue of Christ/The
Redeemer (72 feet tall) with his arms flung wide and surveying
the land! The 1st and 3rd Saturday of the
month are market days in Maratea.
